Stop scrolling! Excel hack you need to see

Youโ€™re on a deadline, staring at an Excel sheet, and something isnโ€™t adding up.

Somewhere in the endless grid of numbers, a formula is off - but where?

Luckily, Excel has built-in tools to reveal those elusive connections between cells.

You can track key numbers and understand your formulas at a glance.

Keep Important Numbers In Sight! ๐Ÿ‘€

Ever find yourself constantly scrolling back and forth in a big Excel file just to check a few important numbers?

There's a better way!

Meet the Watch Window - it keeps important cells visible no matter where you are in your workbook.

Hereโ€™s how to set it up:

  1. Go to the Formulas tab.
  2. Click Watch Window (itโ€™s in the Formula Auditing group).
  3. Click Add Watch, select the cell(s) you want to monitor, and hit Add.

Now, your selected cells stay visible in a floating window that always stays on top.

Even when you switch sheets.

No more hunting for that one number. Just focus on your work, and let the Watch Window do the watching.

You can see what happens when you change your assumptions.

Make changes to the inputs and observe how the formulas update in real time.

That's super handy.

Why not check out the other Formula Auditing tools while you're there. They can save you a ton of troubleshooting time.

Use the tracing options to understand which cells feed into which formula.

๐Ÿ”ต Trace Precedents โ†’ Shows which cells affect the selected formula. Perfect for understanding where numbers come from.

๐Ÿ”ด Trace Dependents โ†’ Shows which formulas use the selected cell. Great for checking what will break if you change a number.

When you enable them, Excel draws arrows to reveal the connections.

๐Ÿ”™ Remove Arrows โ†’ Clears those tracing arrows when you're done.

Bonus Tip: You can also use shortcuts:

  • Ctrl+[ selects all cells with precedents (within the sheet)
  • Ctrl+] selects all cells with dependents (within he sheet)

Hit reply and let me know: whatโ€™s the most confusing formula problem youโ€™ve ever had?

๐Ÿค“ Geeky News

๐ŸŽž๏ธ Improvements to the Clipchamp video editor

Clipchamp is a free video editing program included with Windows. It's currently rolling out some highly requested updates.

They include updates to the interface, making it more streamlined and beginner-friendly, as well as offering dark mode. (It's all the rage these days, I hear ๐Ÿ˜‰)

The editing workflow has also been improved. You can now group assets, such as music, text, visuals, and group them into one track. Editing the timeline is more precise with the addition of timestamps. They've also added AI captions. If you want to try your hand at video editing, give it a go and let us know how it went.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Changes to Together mode in Teams

Together mode brings all the participants of a Teams call into the same virtual space.

With the latest changes (currently in Preview), there's less risk you'll enable it by accident. The setup is now multi-step:

  1. Select View > Together mode in the meeting toolbar.
  2. Under Everyone in the meeting toolbar, you can Change scene and Assign seats.
  3. Once you're happy with the setup, select Everyone to send all participants to Together mode.

๐Ÿ“š Back up your Kindle library while you can

Amazon is removing the ability to download your Kindle books to your computer.

Until now, you could back up your collection (book by book) using the "Download & transfer via USB" feature that's going away on February 26th.

This gave you the opportunity to convert the books to a different format if you switched to a different reader.

From next Wednesday on, you'll only be able to access your Amazon eBooks on Kindle devices and apps.

๐Ÿ‘ Power Stories

Congrats to Michel for earning his Power BI badge. ๐ŸŽ‰

โ€‹Power BI is the end-to-end data analysis tool. Sure, creating visuals may be the most enjoyable part of the process. But you won't have good visualizations without good data.

With Power BI, you get to clean and model the data properly before you start reporting on it.

Michel now has the skills needed to create an insightful report. And I'm glad he finds it satisfying. ๐Ÿ˜

You know the result you want. Excel just wants you to write the perfect formula to get there. And we both know that part can slow us down. Excel recently introduced Formula by Example, which generates a formula from a pattern you provide. This can be helpful. But Power Query has had such a feature for ages. Go to Add Column > Column From Examples. Provide the pattern based on values in other columns, and let it do its magic. And if you have the formula bar enabled (highly recommended), you...

Recently, I spent an hour testing something. I copied data from a PDF into Excel. You might already know what happens when you do that manually: everything from the row jams into one cell. Complete mess. So I opened Copilot in Excel and asked it to split the data for me. It immediately went to formulas. Simple ones first, then increasingly complex combinations. I tested each one. None of them split the values correctly. Here's what I should have done: skipped the manual copy entirely and used...

Someone just joined your team. They got a quick walkthrough from IT. Maybe from you. Now they're staring at a spreadsheet trying not to look lost. You see, there are a few very simple features that would make the life of an Excel newbie a whole lot easier. I cover 8 of them in this video: #1 was shocking when I discovered it. And #7 saved me days when we had to update all our group reporting files after a rebrand. If you already know your way around Excel, be honest: did you know all 8?...
