Let the user decide

I just love seeing all the cool ways you’re using the techniques from our courses.

Watching you bring these ideas to life is what makes teaching so exciting for me!

So, this week, I’m sharing a few tips and updates I think you’ll really enjoy:

  • A simple DAX trick for interactive dashboards 📊
  • Handy updates to Excel’s mobile app 📱
  • And yes, Excel even showing up in a crime novel! 🔍

📊 Make Your Dashboards Interactive with This Slicer Trick

Ever wish you could fit more KPIs (like profit, cost, or sales) in a single chart without overcrowding it?

With Power Pivot and a clever slicer trick, you can let users pick the KPI they want to see.

This avoids cluttering up your dashboard.

Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Add your data to the data model.
  2. Create measures for each KPI.
  3. Create a table for the slicer.
  4. Include guardrails to prevent errors.
  5. Write the DAX measure that switches the KPI view based on slicer selection.

Then, add your chart and format it to match your dashboard! This keeps everything clean and interactive.

Nabanita recently tried this trick to showcase her Power Pivot skills, and her dashboard looked amazing!

She even tagged me on LinkedIn so I could see her final project. ❤️

🤓 Geeky News

📱 Updated behavior of Microsoft 365 mobile apps

Do you sometimes use Excel on your phone?

Microsoft is changing how Excel, PowerPoint, and Word files open on mobile devices.

Before, files opened in the Microsoft 365 app when accessed through Outlook, OneDrive, or Teams.

Now, they will open in the standalone Office apps if you have them installed.

This change helps users who need to open multiple files side-by-side.

Businesses can still manage which apps employees use.

🔒 Sheet Protection in Excel on iPad

Good news if you're using Excel on iPad. It now supports sheet protection.

You can enable, pause, and resume protection. You can also manage settings, change the password, as well as allow or remove edit ranges.

That's handy if you need to access and modify protected sheets on the go.

🍎 Apple Handoff for Office apps

To wrap up the Apple-related news...

Microsoft now supports Apple’s Handoff for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

You can switch between Apple devices, like iPhone to iPad or Mac, while keeping your file open.

Ensure both devices have the apps installed. The file must be in OneDrive or SharePoint. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and activate Handoff in Settings.

When switching, a notification will appear, and the same file will open without making a copy.

💚 Excel used for crime(-solving) 😱

If you can't get enough Excel in your work life, why not introduce it to your leisure reading 😉

Check out this compilation of references to Excel in contemporary crime fiction.

After all, it's a truly universal tool.

There's been another one, Frank realized. He dutifully did his research, then added another name to his Excel spreadsheet.
He was up to five now.

Let's say you're waiting for colleagues to submit the latest data. You need to check if the files came in. And if the data is complete. So you start opening files one by one. It's tedious. And completely avoidable. When Microsoft released the new IMPORTCSV function, I wasn't ready to throw Power Query out the window. It still handles far more sources and does things this new function simply can't. But it got me thinking. What if you could peek at a CSV without fully loading it? Just enough to...

Excel's chart formatting menu is dangerous. Not because it's bad. Because it gives you too many options. And some of them have no place in a professional report. Take this social media trend: pasting images directly into your chart bars. Looks creative. Gets lots of views on YouTube. But would you put that in front of your manager? In just a few extra clicks, the same data can look like this: Same logos. Matching brand colors. Just used with intention. 👉 Watch: How to build this chart in just...

Excel remembers things you teach it. That's not AI. It's a Custom List. And it's been hiding in Excel Options the whole time. That's how you get to automatically fill down months or days of the week. And you can build your own: team names, department codes, project phases - anything you type over and over. Excel learns the order too. So "Mon, Tue, Wed..." or your custom categories fill in automatically. The list lives on your device, not in the file. Set it up once. Use it in every workbook,...
